Liverpool news : The xG stats show Sadio Mane's lack of European goals is no concern

Sadio Mane has been in exceptional form for Liverpool this season, especially in the , where he has netted 16 goals so far.  That tally ranks him the second-highest league scorer for Liverpool, just one behind Mohamed Salah .  It’s the Senegalese international’s best return since arriving at Anfield in 2016. His exceptional form, which included a brace against Burnley on Sunday, made him the 56th player to score 50 goals for Liverpool .  Somewhat surprisingly however, the attacker has managed just one goal in this season’s UEFA Champions League. That goal came in a 4-0 drumming of Red Star Belgrade back in October . What makes Mane’s European conundrum that much more bizarre is his xG stats for the competition so far.  This season, Mane’s combined xG for the Champions League is 4.51.  This suggests given the quality of chances presented to him so far, he should have scored closer to five goals rather than just the one.    That tally ranks him second only to Bayern Munich’s star striker Robert Lewandowski who boasts a total xG of 6.31.  Yet the main difference between the two is the Polish striker is the competition’s top scorer this season, finding the net on eight occasions already. In fact, Mane is the only player in the competition with an xG of over 3.0 to not score at least three Champions League goals so far.  With the Red’s second leg Round of 16 tie against Bayern Munich finely poised following the first leg 0-0 at Anfield, barring a penalty shoot-out, Liverpool will need at least one goal at the Allianz arena to secure progression into the competitions last-eight. So Should Mane’s lack of goals be a concern?  Whilst scoring hot streaks are impressive, if they aren’t backed up by the expected numbers, the chances are, they aren’t sustainable.  Take Manchester City’s Riyad Mahrez for example. Last season the midfielder’s xG total for the season totalled 5.73, yet the Algerian outperformed that total by scoring 12 league goals.  This season, Mahrez is illustrating an xG of 5.44, yet he has scored just six league goals so far. This exhibit’s he is still performing at a fairly similar level this season as he was the last, but he is just returning a more ‘normal’ goal return given his output.   In Mane’s case, it has been the opposite. Perhaps through some poor finishing, or simply just some bad luck, he hasn’t had the goal return his chances have warranted.    Yet, the fact he has xG per 90 minutes in Europe of 0.64 is huge and demonstrates as long as he continues to get on the end of the chances created for him, that drought is always destined to fade away.  The evidence would suggest that you shouldn’t be surprised to see him reopen his Europe
