Fire in Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, France (April 15, 2019)

A massive blaze engulfed the iconic Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris early Monday evening. Authorities have evacuated the area around the 850-year-old cathedral. The roof and a spire have collapsed, according to media reports and videos of the blaze.

The cathedral is considered to be one of the finest examples of French Gothic architecture. The innovative use of the rib vault and flying buttress, the enormous and colorful rose windows, and the naturalism and abundance of its sculptural decoration all set it apart from earlier Romanesque architecture. As the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Paris, Notre-Dame contains the cathedra of the Archbishop of Paris. 12 million people visit Notre-Dame yearly, it thus being the most visited monument in Paris.
